Centre Enrichment

Gardens & Orchard

The St. Camillus Centre has developed gardens that provide fresh food for the children. There are also fruit and nut trees on the property. TLC recently supported the construction of a stronger greenhouse to help extend the growing season, which is quite short in Lesotho. We also funded protective netting to shield the vegetable gardens from the intense hailstorms that often occur during the summer months.

Staff members are employed to manage the gardens, and the children help out when needed. It’s a wonderful thing for the staff to be able to prepare meals for the children using vegetables like spinach, tomatoes, and onions grown right on-site. Any surplus produce is easily sold in the village, providing extra income for the Centre.

Bees & Honey

At the centre, we have maintained two hives of bees, which have become a valuable resource for both the children and the wider community. The honey produced by these bees has not only been enjoyed by the children as part of their meals and activities but has also been sold locally. This initiative has helped foster a connection to nature, supported learning about sustainability, and contributed to community engagement through the sale and sharing of locally sourced honey.

Cows & livestock

The St. Camillus Centre maintains a small dairy herd with the goal of providing fresh milk for the children every day. With the help of a full-time dairyman, the cows are herded to nearby grazing lands during the day. When possible, their diet is supplemented with hay and grain to support healthy milk production. Any surplus milk is sold to local customers who come directly to the Centre, helping to generate additional income.

The Centre also runs ongoing pig and chicken projects. Both animals are raised to provide food for the children and staff, and any surplus is sold to generate extra income
