The first workshop that TLC sponsored for girls and young women was held in 2016. The program was led by Karen Hanson of Girls for the World. That group continues to meet regularly and has grown stronger. Karen most recently returned in 2023 to teach, facilitate and broaden the outreach to girls in the Mohale’s Hoek district of Lesotho.
Girls and young women in impoverished Lesotho are faced with many challenges. Human trafficking, child marriage and rape are not uncommon. We feel it is important to give girls the skills they need to combat those issues.
Several dedicated coaches work alongside the head coach to support teams across multiple age groups, with a special focus on encouraging and developing female players in a country where few women participate in soccer. The club currently supports four teams, sharing limited resources in creative and communal ways—players substitute off the field and pass their shoes to the next teammate, and uniforms are shared among boys, girls, and different age groups. Recently, the program has opened its doors to very young players from our centre, fostering early engagement with the sport. Beyond the field, the coaches play a vital role academically as well, offering tutoring and school support to help players succeed both in sports and in the classroom.
The Bikes Program is a volunteer-run initiative that provides children with valuable skills and positive mentorship. A dedicated male role model, who serves as the program’s mechanic, teaches the children how to maintain and repair their bikes, ensuring they remain safe and rideable. Beyond the workshop, he has established a community bike club and regularly leads group rides with students throughout the Mohale’s Hoek area, promoting physical activity and community connection. In addition to his work with bikes, he volunteers as a tutor and teaches traffic safety, further supporting the children's education and well-being both on and off the road.
